In consulting with my local framer and
members of my quilt guild, The Kingwood Area Quilt Guild
we have come up with the following excellent method of framing
your miniature quilts to preserve and display them.
Choose a frame large
enough for the quilt plus however much room you would like to see of the mat around the quilt
border. |
The frame needs to have a rabbet (this is the
cutout space on the back of the frame edge that the glass, mat, and foam core fit up against)
at least 1/2" deep or more. |
|
The mat, glass, and foam core, cut to fit inside the frame, should all be the same size. Make sure the mat is
"acid free" since the quilt will be touching it. |
 |
Center the quilt on the mat and measure and mark a line just inside of the binding edge.
Punch holes around this line with a large needle approximately one inch apart.
Use 100% cotton thread to stitch up from the back of the mat, catch the inside edge
of the binding, and return through the same hole to the back. |
 |
After stitching all
the way around, loose thread ends can be tied together or taped
to the back of the mat. |
| |
Use spacers between the mat and the glass so the quilt does not touch the glass.
After securing the "sandwich" of glass/mat/foam core into the frame with framing nails,
you can attach kraft paper to the back with two sided tape to seal out dirt. Framed in
this manner no adhesives touch your quilt and it can be easily preserved.
What a great way to show off your quilts and keep them clean and safe!!
